We at the Board of the Newton Taxpayers Association, a non-profit educational and advocacy organization, remind you that we have a City election on Tuesday, November 5.
Every election we evaluate all candidates in relation to their policies and, in the case of incumbents, their practices with respect to fiscal responsibility. A button to download our Voting Guide is attached.
As we have written before, Newton’s long-followed direction has focused on unbridled spending increases paid for by tax overrides and the redirection of employee pension and benefits funds. We firmly believe that Newton must adopt a new direction – reducing spending to bring it in line with inflation and household income growth, while also expeditiously paying back almost $1 billion in scarcely controlled debt.
We are sorry to report that the vast majority of candidates demonstrate little or no resolve to return Newton to a path of fiscal responsibility. The City continues on a slow boat to repaying employee retirement and benefits funds that will end up needlessly costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.
Our mission is to educate, not promote or endorse. Please read our report for facts as to how candidates meet, or fail to meet, the City’s fiscal needs, on a point-by-point basis. Then be sure to vote your mind and conscience on Tuesday. Remember – when we vote, we ARE Newton.
